Gorilla Mercury "disguised" due to copyright
The organizers of the Go Go Gorillas art exhibition in Norwich have been approached by the AIDS charity Mercury Phoenix Trust to remove the gorilla sculpture adorned with singer Freddie Mercury because it infringes copyright.
Rather, the suit painted on the body of the gorilla violates the rights. The organization demanded that the sculpture, which was created by Mick Richardson, be removed and repainted.
In addition to this sculpture, the city also displays statues of another 52 gorillas, painted by various artists.
The creator of the "gorilla Mercury" himself was extremely surprised when he learned about the demand to remove the statue. He said, "It's terrible. She's so cute Igiti Wooden Gorilla Statue . When I was told, I couldn't sleep all night."
The artist was paid £ 800 ($ 1200) to design and paint the statue.
“I am a wall mural artist and I am cautious about copyright issues. I didn’t copy the entire costume. I made enough changes to make it feel like a fan creation and not an exact copy,” he said.
According to organizers, the Mercury Phoenix Trust contacted Wild in Trail, which designed the costume, and asked them to repaint the gorilla on the basis that the design of the costume is the property of a charity company.
According to Wild in Trail director Charlie Langhorn, the gorilla statue will be repainted and will return to the public in 10 days. "We would, of course, prefer to leave everything as it is, but on the other hand, this is not the end of the world," - said Charlie Langhorn.
The Mercury Phoenix Trust is a charitable organization created by members of the rock band Queen after the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury.
